Cape Lookout Lighthouse

Located on Cape Lookout National Seashore, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse was built in 1859.

Its black diamond markings are said to have been intended for Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, but were painted here in error.

Standing 169 feet above ground level, it was damaged by the Confederates in 1862 during the Civil War. Capable of being seen for a distance of nineteen miles, it continues to signal the whereabouts of the dreaded Cape Lookout shoals.
