Cannon Day at Fort Macon State Park is a popular living-history program that gives visitors the opportunity to experience military history firsthand through demonstrations of the fort’s historic artillery. Held several times each year at Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach, the event highlights the role that cannons played in coastal defense and showcases the equipment and techniques used by soldiers stationed at the fort during the 19th century.
Throughout the day, park staff and living-history interpreters explain how various types of artillery were loaded, aimed, and fired, offering insight into the daily operations of a historic military fortification. Demonstrations include discussions of the weapons, the crews who operated them, and the strategic importance of coastal forts in protecting North Carolina’s shoreline. Programs conclude with blank cannon-firing demonstrations that allow visitors to see and hear the power of these historic weapons in action.
Designed for visitors of all ages, Cannon Day combines education and entertainment in an engaging outdoor setting. The event is part of Fort Macon State Park’s broader mission of preserving and interpreting one of North Carolina’s most significant historic sites. Built between 1826 and 1834, Fort Macon played important roles in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War II, and today remains one of the state's most visited historic attractions.
Whether attending for the history, the demonstrations, or a chance to explore the restored fort, Cannon Day offers a unique opportunity to experience North Carolina’s military and maritime heritage along the Crystal Coast.
