  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are high season in Emerald Isle. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses.   • If your group is bringing pets, you must book a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's an individual Crystal Coast destination you are enamored with, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking

  • Get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of problems.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
