Vacation rental tips and tricks:

Getting the best value:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.

Finding the perfect vacation home:

  • Choose your vacation dates and budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Steps to Beach! 2BR/2BA duplex has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your group.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or costs could be applied to your agreement.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Note any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to drive more reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
