Our top Crystal Coast rental home booking tips and tricks:

Getting the best rental value:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best rental within your budget, we recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local Crystal Coast visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Start by having your family commit to the best dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. Peaceful Ocean Club sound front condo with great view and easy walk to the beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before reserving your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a certain Crystal Coast destination you simply love, browse properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of problems.
  • Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a terrific stay? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
