Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best value, try shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Crystal Coast vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Crystal Coast visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Narrow your Search:

  • Begin by choosing a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Casa Atlantica, Oceanfront House in Pine Knoll Shores, NC! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Crystal Coast rentals search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available online. Otherwise, email the property manager before you book the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Note any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
