Tricks and tips to get the best Crystal Coast vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summer is high season in the Crystal Coast area. To book the largest vacation home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Crystal Coast vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Look for your local Crystal Coast visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

Make a plan and choose the perfectvacation home:

  • First and foremost, have your group agree to date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Blue Heron (NEW HOME with lower price, please come and stay!) has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before booking the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.

More tips for your stay:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Upon arrival, document any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local beaches.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental home while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
