Crystal Coast vacation rental tips and tricks:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Reserving your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • To get the best vacation home within budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Often, management companies supply Crystal Coast area travel guide magazines that include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Crystal Coast area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Planning, picking, and booking yourvacation home:

  • Begin by choosing the best vacation week and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Kolby's Kottage, Soundfront House in Beaufort, NC! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.

More considerations:

  • We recommend storing the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
